Most European high-speed trains now require you to reserve a chair & in case you hold a rail pass usually the chair reservation cost is reduced. Sometimes purchasing a point to point ticket can work out to be cheaper or a similar cost. For example in Germany you can travel from Rome to Florence to Venice picking up cheaper point to point tickets depending on the time of day you travel.
